Kinky Boots opened April 4, 2013 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.

Kinky Boots is based on the true story behind the 2005 British film of the same name about a struggling shoemaker Charlie and his drag queen business partner, Lola. Charlie suddenly inherits the family-owned English shoe factory and in order to avoid bankruptcy he develops a plan to produce custom fetish-type footwear for drag artists rather than the men's dress shoes that his firm is known for.

Lola (played by Billy Porter) is a strapping drag performer whom Charlie (Stark Sands) meets by chance and it is Lola who makes Charlie realize that there is an untapped niche market: cross-dressers who need well-made footwear.

A fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos, Lola turns out to be the one person who can help Charlie become the man he is meant to be. As they work to turn the factory around, this unlikely pair finds that they have a lot more in common than they ever dreamed possible. They discover that when you change your mind about someone, you can change your whole world.

Kinky Boots is a fascinating show about two young men who come from seemingly opposite worlds to figure out that they have a lot in common, beginning with the need to stand up to their dads.

The new Broadway musical “Kinky Boots” led the pack with 13 nominations for the 67th annual Tony Awards, including for best musical, director, actor, score and choreographer.
